Synopsis

Janet and her family, her parents and younger brother, were moving to Toronto but as their home wasn’t ready yet, they were going to stay a few weeks in her aunt and uncle’s house. Her cousin, Kevin was a rebellious teenager and he didn’t get on well with his father because Uncle John always said to him that her mother didn’t educate him well and that he was an irresponsible son. They were always arguing and Aunt Sue didn’t know what to do in order to settle their differences. Janet decided to go to the sports center to find a job as a lifeguard but they told her they had already had one so they offered her the chance to work as a volunteer teaching beginners to swim in exchange for a free membership at the sports center. This gave her the opportunity to make her first friend, Melissa, who was also volunteering. Melissa invited Janet to her house on the weekend to go out at night and meet her friends. Since Janet's brother was going on a hike with the scouts, their parents, uncle and aunt decided to go out for the weekend, leaving Kevin at home alone. When night came Janet met Melissa's friends and she was told that one of them was having an affair with her cousin. Janet was not having a good time so she decided to call her cousin and take a taxi home. When she got home the house was full of people and the music was blaring. Janet went to her room and the next morning the two of them put the house in order before her parents arrived. Another day while Janet was going to Melissa’s house she saw Kevin in a motorcycle shop as if he were the salesman and she was surprised since he was supposed to be going to summer math classes to pass the test he had failed the previous year. Janet entered the store and he explained to her that he had to earn money since his parents gave him little and that he refused to go to school in the summer. Kevin opened up completely to Janet and told her why he behaved like that. He told her that he felt that his father was not at all proud to have a son like him and that since then, he had begun to behave like this. Janet understood it perfectly and they agreed that Janet would not say anything about that he had not gone to classes in the summer if he let her give her math classes so that he could pass the exam. So Janet also had to start lying to her parents, because while she was teaching her cousin, her parents believed she was working at the sports center. Everything was going well until one day, while the cousins were studying math at the motorcycle store, Kevin had to go to town to buy a book and left Janet alone in the store. Just then a familiar young man appeared and asked her to let him test drive a motorcycle. The young man stole the motorcycle and when Kevin returned she told him what had happened. Janet had already called the police and they told them that since they were underage, they had to call their parents. The two of them worried a lot since neither of them were supposed to be there. They were able to identify the thief and it turned out he was a friend of Kevin that Janet had seen at the house party. Kevin and Janet were able to explain what the two of them were doing there and Kevin explained to the police that his friend forced him to help him steal the motorcycle. Therefore, he did not have great punishment, they only told him that he would have to do some community work. Their parents understood everything perfectly and both continued studying math happily.
