HEARTSTOPPER by Alice Oseman

SYNOPSIS

The character that behaves in an unexpected way is Nick. He is the popular boy of the popular group of friends, he is straight and he is a rugby player. Nevertheless, when he meets Charlie he starts to meet up with him everyday and he is having feelings for Charlie. He has never felt anything with another boy and he doesn’t expect it. I believe that it is important to see different types of people, specifically on sexuality. Also, to fall for the opposite gender is normalized and if you feel something for the same gender as you, you are not well seen and even though it is now viewed much more favourably, we still have more to do about it. He doesn’t describe any setting but she describes the situation with her drawings. My favorite part is when Nick realizes that he is in love with Charlie and to deal with the situation he searches on google for answers. (page 190-193) I would ask her If she has lived or seen a similar experience to draw and to do this comic and why she decided to do this topic. I would say that she has seen a similar experience, maybe not on her surroundings but yes on social media or Internet, as it is a very common case nowadays. Moreover, I would say that she decided to do this topic because nowadays, it is very necessary.

PERSONAL OPINION

I liked that it shows how a straight boy falls in love with another boy and how the surroundings react to it and also how he finally realizes that he has different feelings as he used to. Moreover, from Charlie's point of view, I believe that it is important to be yourself anytime and not to care about what others think.
