DAUGHTER OF THE MOON GODDESS by SUE LYNN TAN

SYNOPSIS

Wenzhi is presented to us as the best Celestial army soldier, one of the youngest and most celebrated warriors in the Celestial Kingdom. He barely talks about his past, and since Xingyin, our story’s protagonist, is also hiding things from him, she doesn’t push any further. Throughout the story we can read Xingyin’s thoughts and feelings making us suffer or laugh with her at some points in the book. Xingyin, unlike other characters, is brave and resilient. She cries sometimes because she’s human too, but never lets that keep her from her mission or objective, which is freeing her mother from the prison she lives in; the moon. Xingyin’s emotions and personality will continue to be very important in the future. Since many people will be going through hardships, they will have to learn to be more resilient and strong, just like Xingyin.

PERSONAL OPINION

What I really liked about this book is that the protagonist’s actions made sense, and I could feel really identified with her throughout the novel. The plot is also marvellous and the book offers a variety of fantastic objects, animals and places; starting from the different types of realms and the contrasting cultures they have, and ending with the magical swords or bows which give their beholder special powers. My mind can’t comprehend how someone can create a whole book from scratch, especially a fantasy novel. I would ask how she came up with the realms, the characters or the magic powers present in the book. Because even though this novel is inspired by the legend of Chang’e, the Moon Goddess, she did a really great job with the story.
