Synopsis
The book follows four women and their daughters. The women emigrated from China and joined together in San Francisco, to play mah jong. They formed a club they called the Joy Luck Club. At the meetings they gossiped while playing and ate a variety of food. It was called the Joy Luck Club because the women always wished each other joy and luck when they left each other. The book is divided into four parts and each part is divided into four sections. Each mother tells her story, except for Suyuan as she died before the beginning of the book, so it is told by others.
Personal Opinion
It is a beautiful story with a rich character development. Each character is different, but all of them have an interesting side. I felt I had taken part in each life because it is so well told and described. There are happy and sad moments between mothers and daughters, which is very usual in the real world. I'm glad I read this book. It is interesting to read about different cultures, their life changes, their traditions and how they grow up comparing with their parents.
