SYNOPSIS
Hester is a girl who is punished for adultery because she had a daughter out of marriage. Her punishment is the reproach of all the inhabitants of Boston and she has to wear a scarlet letter A on her dress. Everyone asks who her lover is as he must also be punished, but she refuses to say his name. Her husband is a merchant who went on a business trip and people think he died in the sea. In reality, he is alive and goes to Boston seeking revenge and hiding his identity. He calls himself Chilliwoth and works as a doctor.
A few years later, community officials try to take her daughter, Pearl, away from her because the say she cannot instill good values in her, but with the help of Arthur (a minister) she manages to keep her daughter. Suddenly, the minister become ill and Chilliwoth is the doctor. He sees that the illness is caused by psychological distress which makes him suspicious of him. One day, Chilliwoth discovers a mark on Arthur that confirms his suspicions and begins revenge. Hester sees the minister's condition worsening and decides to intervene. She turns to Chilliwoth and asks him to stop increasing Arthur's self-torment but he refuses.
In the end, Arthur, Pearl and Hester decide to run away to Europe but Chilliwoth realizes this and plans to go with them. The day before their escape Arthur confesses to everyone that he is Hester's lover and dies while they are kissing.

PERSONAL OPINION
In my opinion it is an old story, a little sad but entertaining. I would recommend it to anyone who likes to read because as it has some strange names it can be difficult to read if you don't like it. I also think that, in the story, Hester is a very brave woman for her time.
