THE JOY LUCK CLUB- Amy Tan

SYNOPSIS

Four women had to emigrate to America because of the war between China and Japan. In 1949, the four mothers reunited in San Francisco and agreed to continue meeting to play mah jong and that club was called The Joy Luck Club. The book begins when one of the women, Jing-Mei Woo’s mother Suyuan Woo, dies and her daughter has to be part of the Club. The story is divided into 4 series and each series has four personal stories of each mother or of her daughter. In those stories, mothers talk about their youth, especially what they had to leave in China to go to the United States, and daughters talk about the concerns they have.

PERSONAL OPINION

In my opinion, I don’t find this story interesting. Some stories are very moving but others are very boring. It’s not a book to read a single story. It’s a book full of many stories and that’s why I don’t think the book has hooked me. Even so, I liked the story of Jing-Mei Woo’s mother: she had to leave her country and her family to save her life. I think we have to consider how lucky we are not to have wars and have the peace we have today.
