THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON & OTHER STORIES by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Synopsis

In the story “Bernice Bobs Her Hair”, one attitude that has been unexpected for me is when Bernice cuts her cousin’s, Marjorie’s, long braids off with her scissors and she throws them at the front of Warren’s house. I believe that it is a bit weird to cut off someone’s hair without her permission.

All of these short stories deal with the same theme which is love. A number of them illustrate our capacity to do everything that we can to help the people we love. Despite that, I would say that this variety of stories are somehow outdated. This becomes evident when analyzing the presence of violent behavior between men for romantic reasons or the traditional male invitation to women to attend dances, this reflects stereotypes.

Throughout the book, several passages can be observed in which a great description has been made. For instance, the author describes in detail the second part of “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” story in which Benjamin has become a child. How his daily routine is detailed: "Now his nursemaid, Nana, became the center of his little world. On sunny days they walked in the park, and on wet days they played… When he was hungry for his milk, he cried, and that was all" (page 11).
If I had the chance to interview the author of this reading, I would ask him which of the stories he likes more. In my opinion, the author would choose “The Diamond as Big as the Ritz” because I believe that this story deals with very important aspects. The family unity becomes unpredictable along the story especially when they face the threat of losing their home. The family is forced to take extreme measures. Another important aspect is when children are aware that they will no longer be rich. Furthermore, it leaves us with a powerful lesson about priorities in life, reminding us that there are values like freedom, which go beyond the importance of money.

Personal Opinion

As it is made up of several short stories, it is very easy to read and each story is entertaining for the reader. Furthermore, I like love stories indeed and each of them has its share of love so I enjoyed reading them a lot. However, each story has a variety of characters with peculiar names. This factor can become somewhat confusing.
