SYNOPSIS
Rudolf Rassendyll, the main character, behaved in a unexpected way. He went to Ruritania to visit his cousin the king, his intention was to make a change in his life so that he wouldn´t have to return home and start working. However, he had a great opportunity to replace his cousin and become king but he didn´t take advantage of the privilege. Instead of doing everything he could to stay in that position he was true to his word and to his family and decided to help save his cousin from the imprisonment of his brother, the duke. Furthermore, it was only to be expected that he would use the opportunity to marry Princess Flavia, his cousin´s future wife, whit whom he fell in love. One of the most relevant idea that I think is going to be important in the future is loyalty to your friends and family. As we can see in the story the king has some great servants (friends) and a cousin who are willing to give their lives for him. It has always been and will always be important to have people who love us and give everything for us even when we no longer have the strength to fight. In the book we can find several passages where the author gives more detailed explanations: - On the one hand, there are several pictures in the book, thanks to them the author describes very well the place where the scene is taking place and also shows in more detail what is happening. - On the other hand, in chapter 10, where they plan the exit plan, the author describes in detail the room where the king is through the character Johann. In the end, it will not be very important for many to know what is next to the door or in front of where the king is tied up, but it is true that this description helps to understand the situation better. If I could interview the author of this play, I would ask him what he would do in Rudolf's case with Princess Flavia, since the love they had for each other was mutual and it is very difficult to deal with that situation. I think he would answer that he would fight for his true love, that is what most people would do. Also in the book you can see that Anthony Hope is quite romantic in his style.
PERSONAL OPINION
In my personal opinion I think this book is very nice and very recommended for teenagers. I particularly liked the way the author expresses the story, he does it simply but describes everything effectively. What I didn't like is that he almost never mentioned how the princess felt. I think it would be very interesting to know it to see different points of view about what happened. Besides, after finally marrying the real king we don't know if she is really happy with him.
